Why one should limit the salt intake

Salt is one necessary ingredient we all require and it is very beneficial for the body. It contains sodium which plays an important role in the body. It helps to grasp some nutrients essential for the body. It even helps to regulate a number of fluids in the body. Our body is incapable of producing sodium thus we have to provide a sufficient amount of the same through salt. However, an excess of everything is bad. Excess of salt can damage the kidney and also increases the level of water in the body. Thus, it makes the body bulkier and leads to a lot of weight gain. Here are some of the side effects of consuming excess salt:

Causes damage to kidney: An excess amount of sodium in the form of salt is harmful to the body. It makes the kidney to retain more water in order to perform the right function of the electrolyte that dissolves in the blood. However, this causes a lot of pressure on the kidney. According to a study published in 2012 by Nephrology Dialysis, if the consumption of salt is reduced in a person, it eventually leads to low blood pressure and removes less protein from the body.

Causes damage to bones: Excessive salt makes the bones weak. Yes, you heard it right. Excess consumption of salt leads to loss of calcium from the bones, which eventually makes them weak. It may also lead to the problem of osteoporosis. A person should consume both salt and sodium in a proportionate manner. Excess of both is harmful and vice-a-versa. Leads to obesity: Sodium induces hunger hormones in the body. A person consuming excessive salt tends to become more hungry. Eventually, he consumes high calories than ever and has worse eating habits. Sodium tends to make a person obese. It also increases the amount of fat in the body.

Increases blood pressure: Sodium present in the salt can increase the blood pressure. Sodium reduces the synthesis of nitric oxide in the blood and eventually squeeze the blood vessels. THus one should try to limit their intake of salt as it may lead to death. Thus, people who consume excess salt are also the patients of hypertension.
