What Are The Mandated Tests Which Baby Receives Just After Birth

The newborn babies are very delicate and require utmost care and attention. Medically, the newborn baby lacks many nutrients in their body which are essential to provide externally for their well-being.  Hence, there are some mandated tests which newborn baby receives just after their birth and awareness to it is important.

Just after the birth of a child, many vaccines and tests are prescribed for the tenure of at least 6 months. Hence, take a quick read below to know about important vaccinations and tests of a newborn baby:

APGAR Evaluation:

APGAR stands for Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration. This test is conducted in the very first minute after the birth of a child and then after five minutes. With APGAR Test, doctor checks for child’s:

  1. Breathing
  2. Muscle Tone
  3. Heart Rate
  4. Skin Colour
  5. Reflexes

Blood Test:

This is the most important test for the newborn baby to diagnose any chronic health issues associated with it. The test is conducted after one day of the child birth. The blood is drawn out from child’s feet to conduct the test. Hence, this is the prime test which is done once the child is born.

Hearing Test

This test of a newborn is done soon after its birth. There are two types of hearing tests conducted:

  1. Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR): In this test, an electrode is attached to the baby’s scalp which reads the brain’s response to the hearing.
  2. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): In this test, a tiny microphone and earphone are placed inside the baby’s ear. The sound is played to measure the response. Therefore, if the hearing ability is normal, the sound echoes back into the ear canal.

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Hepatitis is a viral disease which attacks the newborn baby. Hence, the Hepatitis B vaccination is given to newborn in series till they are grown up for six months.

Vitamin K Shots:

Newborn babies lack Vitamin K nutrient at the time of their birth which may cause Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding. Therefore, to avoid this chronic issue, the Vitamin K shots are given to newborn babies.
