What Are The Home Remedies For Eye Twitching

Eye twitching is a condition where eyelids (upper or lower) move repeatedly and automatically, often recurring every second or after a few seconds. Sometimes this condition is for a short period of time and sometimes prolonged. Though this doesn’t cause any pain to the person but results in irritation, discomfort and embarrassment (especially while talking to someone). Twitching can occur due to many reasons such as high consumption of caffeine or alcohol, stress in the eye, dry eyes, conjunctivitis or light sensitivity. There are some medical conditions also associated with eye twitching and nervous system disorder.

Here are some home remedies for eye twitching:

Rose Water:

Rose water acts as a cleaner and lotion for eyes. Using rose water cleanses the eyes from dirt, which is one of the main reasons of twitching. Rose water also nourish and relaxes eye muscles.

Warm Compress:

In order to stop twitching, a warm compress is very effective as it enhances eye muscles function. A towel or handkerchief dipped in warm water and then squeezed can be kept around eyes, till the warmness is gone. You can repeat this process for 5-6 times a day.

You can use cotton dipped in rose water also and keep around eyes to control twitching.

Foods Rich in Potassium and Calcium:

Potassium deficiency is one of the main reasons of eye twitching. Regular consumption of Bananas helps in controlling twitching. Similarly, consuming Calcium rich diet such as Yogurt, Orange juice, milk also stop eye twitching as Calcium is important for keeping good health of nerves and nervous system.


Like Warm compress, steam is also an effective way of stopping twitching as it removes dirt from eyes and relaxes muscle movement. Just add a few Eucalyptus leaves in boiling water and take steam for 10 to 15 minutes regularly keeping your head covered with a towel.

Cucumber or Potato:

Covering your eyes with cold, thin sliced Cucumber or Potato for some time also reduces eyes’ stress and stops twitching.

Eye massage:

Regular massage of the area above and below eyes help in a better blood circulation and dust removal. Gently massage the area around eyes with the index finger for about 30 seconds. Repeat this for 5-6 times a day.
