Vitamin intake is beneficial for treating depression. Though it is a solution to treat depression, however, people are not sure about taking vitamins to treat the same. But before one starts taking any supplements or vitamins, he/she should consult a doctor. You should keep one thing in mind that a well-balanced and nourishing diet is the only natural way to stay fit both physically and mentally.
Let’s have a look at the type of vitamins one should take:
1. B-Complex Vitamins: B- Complex vitamin is essential to keep a person emotionally and mentally fit. Vitamin B is very much soluble in the water. So if any person over consumes alcohol, caffeine, etc he must be deficient in vitamin B.
Let’s have a look at the relationship of vitamin B complex with depression.

Vitamin B3 (niacin): Deficiency of vitamin B3 can lead to anxiety and lethargy both mentally and physically. Deficiency of vitamin B3 can lead to psychosis and dementia. Certain food products have Niacin in them which helps people to escape the problem of pellagra.
Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): Deficiency of vitamin B5 can make a person fall into depression and cause fatigue and lethargy in the body.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): Vitamin B6 is necessary for the body to produce amino acids for proteins and hormones of the body. Deficiency of vitamin B6 can lead to weak immunity, confused mental state and skin infections.
Vitamin B12: It is the most common deficiency found in people. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to anaemia, as it helps in the formation of red blood cells. Older people usually suffer from the problem of deficiency of vitamin B12. There is an intrinsic factor that is responsible for the storage of an enzyme that helps in the absorption of vitamin b12 in the intestinal tract. Folic acid: Improper and undernourished diet leads to the deficiency of folic acid. Usually, people who consume excessive alcohol and other kinds of drugs also have the deficiency of folic acid. Hence, it is very important for the pregnant women to take sufficient vitamin. Vitamins avoid the neural tube defects in the foetus.
2. Vitamin C: Vitamin C is required to suppress stress. Therefore, to get rid of skin diseases one should intake sufficient amount vitamin C.
3. Minerals: Deficiency of minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, potassium and many others, make a person depressed and affect him physically as well.
